Seek & Ye Shall Find

Hide & Seek is a favorite childhood game. I loved to hide and wait to be found.  Usually, I’d scream and laugh when someone would find me. Other times, I would rather be the one to find and seek out my sisters and cousins from hidden spaces in the attic or garden or fort.

Jesus promised, “Ask, and it shall be given unto you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.”

Shepherd w/Sheep

As a parent, I’m learning to teach our children to “ask” and wow! I’m learning so much about what happens when you ask for help or ask for exactly what you want. The children know the difference between an instruction and a statement at our house. They say “Its a chilly day” and I don’t presume to offer them a coat or hot chocolate because they are only making a statement. I don’t need to take action. But when they ask, “Can I have a jacket, its chilly today…” I’m every so willing to hunt down a coat, mitten, gloves and beanie for them (in San Diego it does get into the a brisk cool 70 sometimes ;o)

I don’t read minds. I don’t play hide & seek, but I do ask. I ask for help. I ask for more information. I ask and plead in prayer. I often find solace in seeking out answers to questions I’ve asked hundreds of times. And depending on the season of life, those answers change. I adapt. I overcome and I certainly know Heavenly Father knows when I’m making statements or asking for help.

The parable of the lost sheep — not a lamb or a baby sheep, but a full grown sheep with experience to know better. A sheep that other lambs will follow if not found again. A shepherd knows his sheep and goes out to find them. He sleeps with them in fields. He fends off wolves and would give his life to protect them. The sheep know Him. And that lost sheep goes to hide. I often imagine that the shepherd is always aware of the sheep’s location. Only when the sheep is ready to return to the fold does he bleat and beg for help. Then, the shepherd goes to the rescue. If we are sheep and we don’t want to be found, we don’t speak up or say anything. Only when we’re ready to return do we make a big fuss.  Kinda like when I didn’t want to play hide and seek anymore so I’d giggle and laugh to make it easier to be found.

ASK – Ask. Do. Admit what we want/need/desire/hope/wish…

SEEK – Seek. Look for solutions. Think outside the box…

FIND – Find. Make a choice. Choose an option, weight the pro/cons and move forward…

…and then, we’re promised blessing will be OPENED unto us. If we make a wrong choice, ask for help, seek a new solution, find more answers…

I wish you JOY!  Smiles, Anna

Read & Rejoice

It’s great to be eight.

Our youngest just turned six and is learning to draw the number 8. She got a small whiteboard as a gift and covers the surface with figure eights, 8 and says to me, “I can’t wait to be 8.

What a blessing to have “I Want to Be Baptized” and “The Holy Ghost is Like a Blanket” for her to read and ponder before she turns eight and makes that important choice in her life.

I had the blessing of signing a few books for some friends who came to town. I do love signing books for special events like baptisms and confirmations.

The gospel is a joy and at this Easter season when we rejoice in the resurrection of Jesus Christ, I find happiness abounding all around in the simple joys of life, even drawing the letter 8, it’s great!

Celebrate!

Stay Tuned – I’ll be headed to Provo/Orem the first week of May for book signing events.

Ask To Receive

Annalisa Hall @BYU 2013

Annalisa Hall (c) 2013

I champion women and all those who ask for help in times of trial and error.  When mothers have a problem, those who ask for advice, guidance, and/or assistance before lashing out or becoming frustrated are among the brave warriors raising children in this dispensation.

Ask in faith, nothing wavering.  For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.” — James 1: 6

Upon receiving word that my friend, mother of two young children, had tried teaching her children about the Holy Ghost.  All the books on the shelves were too complex.  She desired them to know of his power and goodness.  Instead, she found herself days on end with children scared and unwilling to go to sleep thinking the Holy Ghost was a ghost, like Casper.  She needed something simple and helpful and fast. At wits end, she consulted me and I wrote the following poem in 2008:

A blanket of comfort clean and bright
to take with me day and night.
I am wrapped in love by my blanket.
I am full of good cheer with my blanket.
I am safe and secure in my blanket.
I am peaceful and relaxed by my blanket.
When my blanket is gone, I am sad.
If my blanket is close, I am glad.
The Holy Ghost is a blanket of comfort for me.

I illustrated the little poem and had it spiral bound for her children and mailed it off in hopes it would be helpful.

She immediately emailed saying the children LOVED the little story, especially the boy with spiky hair.  By comparing the Holy Ghost to a blanket, they could understand the concepts of him being a ‘comforter’ and ‘warm’ and that without him we are sad.

More importantly, my friend had the courage to teach her children the gospel.  When she found herself discouraged, she asked for help.  She hadn’t expected me to write and illustrate a little story book for her children, but the Lord knew I could be helpful and I followed the promptings of the Holy Ghost.

Since that time, the little poem evolved into a storybook expounding on many analogies aimed to help children understand the Holy Ghost.  With much prayer and diligence, a publisher and illustrator were selected and the book “The Holy Ghost is Like A Blanket” is now published by Cedar Fort Inc with Corey Egbert as illustrator.

I’m impressed that one act of courage to ask has turned into many receiving this wonderful gift and for a book available to all in hopes you can learn about the Holy Ghost.

Smiles, Annalisa
